What
is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture
is a healing art that originated in China over
2000 years ago. It is based on the principle
that we are animated by a vital force called Qi
(pronounced chee). Qi is generated by the
internal organs and circulates in distinct pathways
to the surface of the body, where it can be accessed
at acupuncture points. When your Qi becomes
weak or the flow is blocked, you may experience
illness, pain, or emotional distress. Acupuncture
balances the flow of Qi to restore health on physical
and emotional levels. With this holistic
approach your emotional functioning is seen as
being connected with your physical functioning.
In
Western medical terms, the manipulation of acupuncture
points produces the release of chemical cascade
within the peripheral and central nervous systems.
The chemicals, known as neurotransmitters and
endorphins, relieve pain, reduce inflammation,
boost the immune system, and produce a sense of
well-being.
What
are Chinese Herbs?
Chinese
herbs are often used along with acupuncture to
help internal conditions. With thousands
of years of written history to draw from, they
are a powerful modality which requires extensive
training to use correctly. There are herbal
formulas for pain and acute conditions like colds
and flus, and there are tonic herbs to strengthen
the constitution which have no equal in western
medicine.
What
are Treatments Like?
Your
acupuncturist uses sterile, single-use needles
that are as thin as human hair. This means
that you will usually feel only a slight pinch
(or nothing at all) from the needles. You
may feel a tingling or aching as the Qi balances.
Needles are left in place for 10-30 minutes.
Many people relax deeply or fall aslep during
treatments.
Since
each person is unique, your acupuncture treatment
will also be uniquie and may vary as your symptoms
change. Usually one to two visits a week
are recommended for at least 8-12 treatments.
Acute conditions may respond more rapidly, while
chronic problems may take longer to resolve.
Some people experience dramatic results after
the very first session.
Is
it Safe?
Acupuncture
is very safe when performed by a qualified practitioner.
The current standards of education are 3 years
of graduate level study at an accredited acupuncture
school, followed by testing for competence (board
accreditation) by the National Commission for
Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).
What
Does it Help?
Acupuncture
is particularly helpful in the management of chronic
pain and illness. As a safe and effective
therapy it has been publicly acknowledged by the
National Institutes of Health and the World Health
Organization. Many people have used it for
a wide range of problems such as:

tendonitis, knee & shoulder pain.
